GOVERNOR RAM GAWANDE:

Atmaram “Ram” Gawande was inducted in Athens Rotary Club by past District Governor Carl Roberts.  Since that time, he has served on numerous committees at both the club and district level. He served as Assistant Governor for 4 years.  Since 2001 he has been Chairman for the Avoidable Blindness Initiative.  He   received the Rotary Foundation District Service Award in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005,  2006 and Polio District Award in 2008.

Ram is born in rural India and went to medical school in the central India city of Nagpur.  He did his internship and surgical residency in Brooklyn, NY, and finished his Urology residency training at the New Jersey College of Medicine.  Since 1973 he has been a private practicing urologist in Athens. He was Chief of Urology and Chief of Staff at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens and President of Athens County Medical Society.   A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is certified both in general surgery and urology, is an active member of medical societies.  He received the Sushruta Award for his philanthropic work in education from the Indian American Urological Association.

He is married to Rotarian Sushila, a pediatrician.  They have two children, their son Atul, and daughter, Sumeeta, all enjoy tennis. Atul and his wife, Kathleen, have three children,  Atul is an Endocrine Surgeon and a staff writer for New Yorker magazine. He has written 2 New York times best seller books.  Sumeeta is a lawyer in Newark, N. J.

Ram and Sushi are retired and devoting time for Rotary.  They feel blessed to be able to connect their  birth place, India, and to their adopted land of America.
